‘Resulting from a seamless convergence of poetic vision and technical mastery, the transporting landscape works of Steve Freestone draw viewers into the mythology of some of Australia’s most prehistoric and enigmatic regions, where order and harmony stand opposed to chaos and discord, where poetry wrestles with concept, form withes in folds of space, while contrasting yet complementary hues produce a frisson of vibrating energy across the field of view. Freestone’s complex and many layered creative process is informed by a life devoted to the arts. His current works, which smoothly combine figurative composition and planes of abstraction, are influenced in part by abstract expressionist painters Hans Hofmann and Richard Diebenkorn, both masters of colour. Freestone’s thoughtful labours in the realm of colour achieve their vindication when the initial emotion evoked by the landscape re-emerges through the painting, enabling reconnection with truths revealed while engaging with a place. Driven by a strong spiritual connection to Australia’s deserts, rivers and gorges, Freestone’s artistic journey unfolds on canvas towards an ever deeper and more meaningful relationship with the land.’
